Whirling Dervishes

Our growing collection of Whirling Dervishes depicting the dance of the Mevlevi are proving to be more and more collectable.

The Whirling Dervishes are members of the Sufi sect, based in Central Konya, Turkey.   Their founder, Mevlana, was born in 1207 and advocated a doctrine calling for unlimited tolerance, goodness, charity and awareness through love.  This belief is represented through the dance of the Whirling Dervishes, Sema.   The followers of Mevlana spin around and around in a ritual which symbolises the world united in love and keeping step with the world’s universal rotation.  The Mevlevi dance with one hand pointed to the sky and the other to earth, representing the love of God spreading from heaven to earth.
