Cemal Toy

Proving to be extremely popular with our customers Cemal Toy has a growing reputation both in Turkey and internationally.  His work is influenced by the detail pictured in classical Turkish minatures and the patterns which are intrinsic to Turkish carpets.  These he incorporates into his art with his own contemporary twist.  His interpretation of the dance and movement of the famous ‘Whirling Dervishes’  has made his work sort after and collected around the world.

Born in Kütahya, Turkey, Cemal Toy graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul in 1991.  His first private exhibition on Turkey was held the following December at The State Fine Arts Gallery in Istanbul.  This was followed by successful exhibitions at the Peyami Art Gallery in 1993 and 1996.

He sees his art as bringing a new interpretation and method of expression of modern Turkish art.  He is influenced by the classical Turkish minatures of the Ottoman period and the emotions and personal experiences woven into traditional Turkish carpet design.  He enjoys using a variety of mediums including acrylics and watercolours on parchment.

Currently based in Istanbul, Cemal Toy continues to paint and to share his passion for art by teaching students at the University of Art in Istanbul.  His works can be found in collections around the world.
